Windigipet -> external tacho

Hello,
I have a tacho from a real locomotive, which I can control trough a COM port and a script (I know what commands to send, so I can use C, C++, or other languages).

I would like to build a 'simulator' using a camera-waggon.

I know that it is possible to set up a joystick to control a locomotive, but what about a feedback? I would like to read speed and function status from WDP: is it possible?

Or should I sniff DCC signals?
