English workshop 10 ??
« am: 14. Dezember 2004, 18:13:32 »
Hello !

Long time since my last post on the forum.  I have been quite busy programming WDP, and I seem to be getting the hang of it (most of it).  Anyway, I do have a Maerklin turntable and a 7687 decoder for it.  I am using Intellibox.  So I need to modify the turntable, as described in workshop 10_2.  Ny problem is that my german is not too good.  So I have problems understanding the workshop.  I really have tried hard, but there is a lot to read, and there is too much I do not understand.

Has anyone translated workshop 10_2 to the english language?  If so, I would be very glad to get a copy !

Regards,
Per.

Hi Per,

unfortunately the revised version of WS10 is not available in English yet. It´s not planned to translate it in short term. One reason is that we are working on the German release of WDP V9.0 with highest priority yet. The other reason is that there might be some changes in the software regarding the control of a turntabel. This means that the usage of a turntable withing WDP will change to a more comfortable way.
The modfication of the hardware (turntable) in both workshops remains the same.

Regards

Ruediger

Hello Ruediger.

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I understand you are busy, but I thought maybe somebody else with good knowledge of both german and english language, had translated this workshop.  I really do want to be able to make the hardware modifications as soon as possible.

Look forward to version 9.  I suppose it will take close to a year before we have the english version?

Regards,
Per.

Hi Per,

I recommend to take Norbert´s offer to exchange questions & answers directly with him via mail. He´s our "Mr. Turntable" and I´m pretty sure there is nothing regarding the turntable which he cannot answer.

Currently there is no release forecast for the English - or any other international version. To be honest, it´s not a problem to translate WDP itself (or any other EXE-File provided with WDP) - WDP is already designed to swap lanuguages quite easy. The real (timely) "show-stopper" is the expenditure to translate the manual(s). So if there´s anybody out there who would like to help...feel free to contact us

Regards

Ruediger

Hello Ruediger.
RE. your comments about translation of manuals. What are we talking about in number of pages?. The workload could eventually be divided between a number of people?

Hi Mogens,

I guess at the end it will be something around 300-400 pages whereas 80% needs to be translated from scratch...
From my point of view I do not recommend to divide it between several people because of style, naming convention, etc.
I guess it would be unreadable at the end...

Hello Ruediger,

On one had I agree that the end result of several people translating parts of a large manual would result in a poor quality product.
A better approach is to use serveral "contributors" to translate whole sections of the original manual to produce a "draft" manual. Then use only one (or maybe two) editors to edit the style of English and ensure consistent terminology is used across the whole manual. These editors would not be able to translate from the original language.  In effect, like a real publishing house, they are starting with a poorly written book and reshaping it into a professional product.  They would also test the product using a final version of the manual to ensure that the manual provided the correct instructions for the software.

Is this a good project for English language students at a European university???

Any other ideas?
Adrian

Why making a limitation to Europe? What about Australia?

Am I right to make a note that you are the 1st volunteer for this project?

Cheers

Ruediger

Hello !

Thank you very most for this great offer !  I will be happy to hear from you.  I will send you a personal message directly to your email-adress, maybe we can go from there.

I am sorry that my german is too bad.  I did learn it some years in school, but it is 30 years ago, and the teacher was extremely incompetent, so I was happy when those lessons were over.  And I never practiced the language later.  So my best foreign language is english.

I can see that there will be problems getting the whole workshop in english.  This is a pity, for as far as I can understand from it, it is very good, and I would love to be able to read it.

Anyway, thanks for your kind offer, I will send you a personal email, maybe we can go from there.

Best regards,
Per.
