Decoder-types...?
« am: 26. Dezember 2008, 16:42:58 »
Hello, and Merry Christmas!

The holidays is a good time for programming (smile..).

I have a question:  In the Loco database, I must decide decoder-type for each loco.  I have obviously done this wrong before, but I would like to do it correctly now.

Can you tell, with 100% certainty, what I should put in for decoder type:
1:  Maerklin old 6090 with old Motorola protcol
2:  Maerklin old 6090 with new Motorola protcol
3:  Maerklin 60901
4:  ESU LokPilot (version 2 and 3)
5:  Roco decoder with load-regulation (newer locos)

ESU Loksound decoders have been programmed in DCC (28).
MFX-decoders have been programmed as MFX with additional func-decoder for F4-F8.

Best regards,
Per.

(I am using the Tams controller).

Hello Per,

1:  Maerklin old 6090 with old Motorola protcol ->Motorola I 14
2:  Maerklin old 6090 with new Motorola protcol ->Motorola II 14
3:  Maerklin 60901 ->Motorola 2 27b
4:  ESU LokPilot (version 2 and 3) ->DCC28 or DCC128
5:  Roco decoder with load-regulation (newer locos) ->DCC28 or DCC128 if possible, otherwise Motorola II 14

ESU Loksound -> DCC (28).
MFX-decoders ->Motorola 2 27b

Best regards
Markus

Hello, Markus, and thanks.

A few questions..:

You wrote:
3:  Maerklin 60901 ->Motorola 2 27b
The english manual says:
•Motorola 2 (27a) resp. Motorola 2 (27) for Märklin CS/ESU ECoS:
   >  Märklin 6090x decoder, old Tams LD-W-2
So what should it be, 27b or 27a ?

You also wrote:
MFX-decoders ->Motorola 2 27b
But there is one MFX (129) in WinDigipet.  Why not use that one?  I do....

Best regards,
Per.

I made a mistake in my answer. Correct is Motorola 2 (27a) as stated in the manual.

I you do use the hidden m3 option within the Tams (in German it is explained here: http://www.bahnhistorie.de/_sgg/m2m4_1.htm, maybe your browser can translate it for you), then you should use MFX. Otherwise it makes no difference if you use Motorola 2 27b or MFX.

Best regards
Markus

Hello again.

So 27a it is, then.  OK.

No, I do not use the hidden M3.  I have read that it is a bit dangerous, so I avoid it.  At least for now.

For LokPilot you said to use DCC28 or DCC128.  Those decoders are for both Motorola and DCC.  Why use DCC and not Motorola?  Is there a difference in use?  Is DCC better than Motorola?
I have been using Motorola so far.

Hello Per,

the communication on the track (and because of this the reaction of the Tams MC) is faster for DCC compared to Motorola. After changing all mutli-protocol-decoders at my layout from MM to DCC I got for example an increase in initialisation speed at the program start of more than 50%.
And also using addresses above 255 is very interesting. So by now I use m3 for MFX locos, MM27a for all locos with original older Märklin decoders (60901 and C-Sinus) and DCC for all multi-protocol-deocoders.

Best regards
Markus
